The practice of naturopathic medicine is permitted and regulated by the majority of the United States; however, the practice is prohibited in only two States, South Carolina and Tennessee. (Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Vermont, New Hampshire, Oregon, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah and Washington) Naturopathy programs in the United States are similar to that of Canadian naturopathic medicine programs in that they encompass a four-year course of study, and teach similar curricula.

Overall, the goal of naturopathy programs is to give licensed NDs the six principles of healing, which includes "The healing power of nature," "Identify and treat the cause," "First do no harm," "Treat the whole person," "The physician as teacher," and "Prevention."
